Relationship with the NLC
The National Liberation Council elects the Political Bureau and the Secretary General. It oversees implementation of National Convention resolutions and the work of the Bureau between conventions.
The national Political Bureau is the SPLM's top executive body: it steers policy and acts collectively under the Chairman.
The Political Bureau is the SPLM's highest executive organ at national level. It works under the Chairman, who chairs its meetings and provides overall political direction between sessions of the National Liberation Council.
The Bureau has 35 members: the Chairman, two Deputy Chairpersons, and 32 other members elected from the National Liberation Council, including the Secretary General and deputies. Representation reflects states, the Abyei Administrative Area, and the Women, Youth, and Veterans Leagues. Members serve a five-year term.
The Political Bureau formulates Party policy, supervises political and administrative work, oversees Party finances and assets, directs the National Secretariat, and ensures that SPLM structures function democratically and effectively. It also guides candidate selection, election regulations, and the implementation of programmes that advance a democratic developmental state.
