June 26, 2026
SPLM Secretary General, Cde. Dr. Akol Paul Kordit reiterates party's full readiness for December 2026 elections, during his participation in a panel discussion Breaking the Cycle of Perpetual Transition in South Sudan which was organised by UNMISS and Centre for Strategic and Policy Studies (CSPS).
Cde. Dr. Kordit noted that while South Sudan’s administrative structure appears to serve governance, it is ethnically organized and often exploited by political elites, creating structural weaknesses. He emphasized that peace cannot be achieved using the instruments of war and that there is an urgent need for reforms within the political parties to the R-ARCSS. The SPLM Secretary General stated that the SPLM is prepared to hold elections by December of this year as a "sanitizing" procedure to address the political crisis and hold leaders accountable.
The Secretary General noted that holding elections is a necessary procedural step to restore a functioning, accountable government. He underscored that political parties must be internally democratic to serve the country effectively, noting that a party that is not fair to itself cannot be fair to the nation.
The goal is to move beyond the current political state, which is structurally weak, toward a system where ministers are accountable to Parliament, ensuring stability and long-term democratic prosperity.
The current debate among the population and at the grassroots level is not focused on the constitution-making process, but rather on basic services, liquidity issues, salary arrears, security, and food security, the fundamental survival of our people. We must address these problems and balance our ambitions with our duty to serve the people.
The SPLM SG highlighted launch of SPLM Institute for Strategic Studies aims establish a policy framework that prioritizes policy over politics.
