SPLM SG Reaffirms Commitment TO Women's Empowerment Ahead Of SPLM Women's League National Constitution Conference

July 28, 2026

The SPLM Secretary General General Cde. Dr. Akol Paul Kordit convened a strategic preparatory meeting today with leadership representatives of the SPLM Women League in the presence of SPLM Secretary for Popular and Syndicated Organisations Cde. Mary Paul Ngondeng. The purpose of the meeting was to brief the Secretary General about the draft constitution of the women's league ahead of their national constitution conference, bringing together delegates from all the states and administrative areas.

During the meeting, the Secretary General assured the women of his full support and commitment to empower South Sudanese women to step up and claim their place in nation and state building. He emphasized that the history and sacrifices of the Women within the movement cannot be underestimated or undermined. Cde. Mary Paul Ngondeng stated that Women have historically faced marginalization and severe hardships, yet they played a crucial, indispensable role during the liberation struggle.

From serving as logistical backbones, carrying food and ammunition to the frontline to the SPLA freedom fighters, to enduring silent suffering and losing their lives between their homes and the barracks, their contributions were vital. Despite lacking formal recognition as martyrs and soldiers, women suffered immense losses, with many giving up their sons to fight for the cause of the movement.

As we approach Martyrs' Day on July 30th, we must honor our mothers, wives, sisters, and daughters, ensuring that women are never forgotten or held hostage, but rather remembered as true heroes, liberators, and martyrs.

The Secretary General affirmed that the Women's League stands as a dedicated institution committed to the vision, mission, aims, and objectives of the SPLM. Recognizing that women possess the power to shape society and that their leadership complements our national work, the SPLM is committed to empowering the Women's League, unleashing its full potential, and actively integrating its role into upcoming congresses and national convention, and the finalization of the SPLM Women's League National Constitution Conference.

"We deeply appreciate our SPLM Secretary General for his stand and continuous support of women," Cde. Adak Costa stated. "As we bring our delegates from all the states and the administrative areas to attend this constitutional conference, things will be different. This platform will give our women an opportunity to ensure that our voices are well represented, leading directly into grassroots mobilization."

Echoing these sentiments, Cde. Prof. Julia Duany, Chairlady of the SPLM Women League Constitution Drafting Committee, emphasized the transformative nature of the upcoming constitutional document for women nationwide.

"Our women have started to organize themselves to effectively lead the women of South Sudan," Cde. Prof. Julia Duany remarked. "This constitutional document is not just going to remain a static reference file; it is going to be a living, working document for women across the country. We look forward to a successful constitutional conference so that this vital document is fully owned by South Sudanese women, and especially the women of the SPLM."

The leadership reiterated that preparations are moving forward efficiently to ensure robust representation, institutional growth, and active grassroots engagement as the party builds toward the landmark conference.
