SPLM Chairman Directs the Secretary General to Re-organize the Party for Elections at the SPLM Leadership Summit (Day One)

July 2, 2026

In a pivotal moment in the party's history, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) convened a strategic leadership summit that hummed with the energy of renewal and national purpose. Under the steady hand of Chairman H.E. Gen. Salva Kiir Mayardit, the gathering brought together the movement’s leadership from the deputies of the Chairman, Secretary General and his deputies, members of the Political Bureau and the National Liberation Council, SPLM State Chairpersons and Secretaries, the Executive and Parliamentary caucuses and the dynamic SPLM Leagues.

The atmosphere was set by the SPLM Chairman, who invited the assembly to pause for a moment of silence before issuing a clarion call to action. Declaring that the nation has for too long been caught in a cycle of endless transition, the Chairman challenged his comrades to break free from the status quo. "We’ve de-linked the process of the census and constitution-making to clear the path for elections," he stated, emphasizing that the roadmap has been amended to finally grant the people their fundamental right to choose their leaders.

He urged the party to shed old habits and embrace a culture of meritocracy, stating, "We must introduce modern ideas and policies to streamline the SPLM vision with the current expectations of our people". He underscored that peace remains the bedrock of his leadership and the only mechanism to secure the fruits of liberation. Challenging the gathering to deliver a resolution that will make SPLM great again.

Crucially, the Chairman issued a definitive directive to end the practice of external influence in governance: the era of community-based lobbying and private recommendations is over. He made it clear that the SPLM will not function outside of its own structures; individuals must be screened, vetted, and recommended exclusively by the party for any government appointment.

Prior to the Chairman’s address, the SPLM First Deputy Chairman, Cde. Prof. James Wani Igga, offered a stirring reflection on the movement’s journey. He honored the revolutionary heroes and reminded the attendees of the heavy sacrifices made along the way, highlighting the Chairman as the last remaining founding member of the SPLM/SPLA, a leader who survived the perils of history, a leader whose unwavering resolve has remained the movement's constant anchor through decades of struggle.

The party’s operational readiness was further detailed by the SPLM Secretary General, Cde. Dr. Akol Paul Kordit. Praising the Chairman’s wisdom in convening this summit, Dr. Kordit outlined a strategic shift toward internal discipline, rigorous membership registration, and the issuance of party IDs. He emphasized that the movement is actively bridging the generational gap through specialized cadre training to ensure that the party remains a robust, forward-looking force with no leadership vacuum. He reinforced the Chairman’s mandate, confirming that all party members must adhere to the new standards where private lobbying is replaced by formal, party-led recommendations.

The summit opened with a warm welcome from the host, H.E. Cde. Emmanuel Adil Anthony, Chairperson of Central Equatoria. He lauded the Chairman’s steadfast leadership and vision in steering the nation toward stability, commending the Secretary General and the National Secretariat for organizing a timely initiative that has successfully energized the movement ahead of the general elections.

As the summit continues for the next five days, the message is clear, the SPLM is moving forward as a united front, standing firmly behind its flag bearer Cde. Salva Kiir Mayardit with a renewed commitment to peace and the fulfillment of the liberation struggle's promise.
